The growth of Internet globalisation of trade and rise of information recast the rate of information system in the world of business and marketing. Internet is becoming the formation of new business models, new business process and new ways of distributing knowledge. The word information refers to the data which is organised and presented at a time and place so that decision makers may get the right information at right time and take action on time. Information is the result of the processing data.

The information system can be defined technically as a set of interrelated component that collects, process, store and distribute information to support decision making coordinate and control. Information system may also help managers as well as workers to analyse the problem, visualise complex subject and create new products.

MIS is a system of people, equipment, process, document and communication that collects, validates, operates, stores and present the data for use in planning, budgeting, accounting, controlling and doing other management process. It is a computer based network containing one or more operating system which provide relevant data to management for decision making.

Characteristics of MIS

1.Information flow on regular basis

In the business world the development is so frequent that a gap can not be allowed to continue, specially while managing the marketing information system. MIS makes the possible the information flow on a regular basis so marketing executives receive and transmit the problem and information even in short interval. This continuity of flow of information simplifies the task of planners as they come to know about the changing environment with the help of MIS.

2. Future oriented

The MIS is a future oriented system which is instituted with the purpose of effective planning and control. The MIS on the basis of latest information suggest development to be expected in the future results. Organisational potential or even survival rest on how well the information is managed.

3. Operated electronically

The entire function of MIS i.e. collecting , processing, filtering , storing and getting the finding are done with the help of advanced computer softwares, operated and controlled by system analyst. Hence the whole MIS is based on advanced technology.

4. Operated by system analyst

Being a technical system of managing the information, the MIS is operated by the system analyst. They are supposed to be technically trained to design the system. In true sense it is an organised on going system for making available to the decision makers the necessary information.

5. Flexible in nature

The design and implementation of MIS has been flexible enough to incorporate all the features that need to be incorporated. In case a situation arises to make changes in the MIS it is very easy to make changes. Hence MIS is flexible in nature.

Functions of MIS

1. Assembling of data

It is first stage of data collection in which data collected from internal as well as external sources are stored in the data bank. There are many technique to follow while collecting the data. Many technicals person are involved in collecting the data of the management as well as outside the organisation. Data should be collected from both the sources in order to take right decision.

2. Processing of data

The processing of data is the second stage which generally means editing, tabulating and summarizing the data. All the necessary datas are carefully edited and they eliminate the data which is not required. the system analyst are engaged for this purpose.

3. Analysis of data

This is the third function performed by MIS where take all the quantitative data and perform the work such as finding out the percentage, ratios and test of statistical significance. This function is also performed by system analyst.

4. Storing of data

This is another function of MIS which meant to store the relevant data for the use in future. This function involved filing, indexing, relocating of the data analysed.

5. Filtering the data

MIS filters the data according to the requirement of different department in the organisation and it also filters the information according to the need to each level of management .

6. Presenting the data

After performing the previous function the last function of MIS is to present the data to the organisation so that they can plan their objective and make decision for the future. It present the relevant information to all level of management.
